Where We Are Matters

Location matters in so much of what we do: logistics, supply chains, marketing analytics all depend on a sense of location. In this workshop, students will learn intuitive tools for analyzing how geography impacts consumer and citizen behavior. Using both ArcGIS Online and ESRI Business Analysts, you will learn how to address real world problems for reaching and engaging customers.

All software is in the online environment; participants will receive a free license to each platform with their participation in the workshop.

Topics include:

  • Introduction to GIS
  • Spatial data structure
  • Use of open-source GIS
  • Creating the Honest Map
  • Hotspot analysis
  • GIS for location analysis

Brent Never (Ph.D., Indiana University) is an Associate Professor of Public Affairs at the Henry W. Bloch School of Management. His research considers the spatial and geographic implications of a decentralized human service system. Using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and spatial regression methods, he has worked to identify communities underserved by human services. He has also worked to highlight clusters of financially distressed nonprofit organizations, those most likely to go out of business in the near future raising the question as to who is served by financially ‘sick’ human service providers.
